The Boycott of Mediocrity…

Oswald Chambers reminded me this morning that, “The voice of the Spirit of God is as gentle as a summer breeze— so gentle that unless you are living in complete fellowship and oneness with God, you will never hear it.” I can’t help but believe that in some sense our hearts all long for this. We long for a deeper connection with our creator and we never feel complete or fully alive until we have found this place of ‘oneness with God.’ Do you think that’s true?

So many of us, myself included, spend too much of our lives striving after things that in the end won’t make a difference to anybody – including ourselves. We peruse a bigger house, a fancier car, the latest and greatest ‘stuff’, and in the process forget those things that are most important. What do you own that won’t eventually end up in a landfill? Thrift shops are full of gadgets, appliances, tools and clothes that people used to call treasures; items that people sacrificed and saved to possess. You can now find those items on a dusty shelf with a ninety-nine cent blue price tag on them. I’m also convinced that the stuff we want often perpetuates a mediocrity that prevents us from perusing those things that are truly most important. I’ve been greatly convicted of this in my own life this week. Jesus says in Luke 6:45 that, “…the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.” If we truly gauge what our “heart is full of” by what our “mouth speaks”, then what can we conclude from our everyday conversations? What do we value? What do we want most from this life?

I think its time that we start a boycott of mediocrity. It’s time to stop perusing those things that eventually will end up at Value Village, and start investing in what it truly means to, “live in complete fellowship and oneness with God.”
