It worked, even if it didn’t.

Sunday, March 30, 2014 goes down in my history books as one of the greatest revelations of the heart of Waverley Church responding to the heart of Jesus Christ.

Basically an emergency appeal was given out to the congregation based on little information and preparation. We asked the church family to help an immigrant family set up home and house with just one week's notice. Over 50 people responded immediately. Many more were preparing themselves.

In the end, the family in question changed their plans at the last minute.

Was this a fail?

Let's see what the Bible says:

Ephesians 2:8 - 10
8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast.
10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

We were created to do good works!

What does the Bible mean to do good works? TO SERVE! We are God’s handiwork, made by God to serve.

We serve by doing the good deeds God has prepared for us to do in Christ Jesus.

Hebrews 10:23 - 25
23 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, 25 not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

We serve one another by doing the good deeds God has prepared for us to do in Christ Jesus.

John 13:34, 25
“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

Bob Goff said this: “God doesn’t need a return address. Love is its own return address. Just go out and do something. Everyone will know where it came from.”

We serve one another in love by doing the good deeds God has prepared for us to do in Christ Jesus.

Conclusion: This was a clear win. God wants us to respond to needs by serving in love. He equips us and opens the doors, we just need to step through.

His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!
