Getting God Out of the Clouds

By: Admin on March 3, 2014

It has been said, “Right beliefs result in right living.” (Andy Stanley) We do want to put our faith into action. When we are clear on our faith, we will have clear direction in our actions.

When we think about "God", what comes to mind? What does "God" mean? Is God a person, an idea or a philosophy?

In Genesis 1:1, the first words of the Bible say, "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”

The Bible is not a book written to give a scientific defence of the existence of God. It assumes that God exists and acts and carries that theme to the very end. The Bible opens with a statement of God and then progressively and creatively reveals more and more about God until the concluding revelation at the very end.

As we study the Bible we realize that we really don't know God as much as we would like. On the surface, it seems like God really is "up there in the clouds", or even beyond the clouds. We are often personally troubled by God's apparent distance.

Let's get God out of the clouds. Let's look at three different ways that God is taken out of the clouds and brought to us:

Exodus 3:14
God said to Moses, “I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am has sent me to you.’” (NIV)

God appeared to Moses in the form of a burning bush. A voice from the fire came to Moses, God's voice. It came with a command: go to the Emperor of Egypt, the Pharaoh, and demand that the enslaved nation of Israel be released to go to the land God had promised them. He was told to alert the Israelites that their freedom had been declared. Moses wanted to know what to say when asked, "Who sent you? What is their name?"

God said his name was, "I AM"

"I AM" is one who IS:
- With full independence and self-sustaining ability
- Fully powerful and having all authority
- Designing his plans, moving those plans forward, raising up and pulling down, and one who will not be undermined by anyone

"I AM" is the identity and person of God.

God did bring Israel out of Egypt and put them into the land he had promised them. But it was more than just a geographical location, there was a reason behind this place. The stage was set for the next revelation of God.

Jesus was in constant debate and battle with the Jewish religious leaders. Finally the leaders demanded to know where Jesus got his claim that he knew about Abraham the Father of the Jews. In fact, Jesus claimed Abraham knew HIM! Jesus was a 33 year old punk in the leaders' minds and he was making huge claims. They wanted to know who he was. "What is your name?" was the essence of their question.

Jesus replied in John 8:58, “Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.” (NKJV)

Jesus pointed at himself and made the same statement with the same name as was given to Moses, "I AM". He declared himself to be God.

Then in John 14, Jesus was with his disciples and revealed one more piece about God. In John 14:26, Jesus declared, "But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” (NIV)

The Holy Spirit is introduced to us in Genesis 1, when it says God created the Heavens and the Earth. This Holy Spirit knows all things and teaches all things. The only one who knows ALL things is God. So, what of the Holy Spirit?

Paul goes on to expand on this thought in 1 Corinthians 2:10 and 11, "The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God."

Who knows God but God himself? Therefore, the Holy Spirit is God, too!

God the Father is I AM. Jesus, the Son, is I AM. The Holy Spirit is God, I AM, too! Three separate people. Three separate personalities. One unified God. We really can't grasp this because we are so limited in our knowledge and comprehension, but the Bible affirms there is ONE God, yet THREE persons who are 100% God.

Still in the clouds?

Let's take a look at the contexts of the stories above:

God "came out of the clouds" and spoke to Moses in the form of a burning bush. He didn't come to talk philosophy or esoteric subjects, he told Moses to assure the slaves in Egypt that they had been heard and would be freed. Then he gave a commission to Moses to lead them and gave him the resources to carry it out.

God, I AM, came to earth in the form of a man. Jesus was 100% man and 100% God, with no sin. He came to die for our sins and pay humanity's price for walking away from God. I AM came to do this for us out of love.

The Holy Spirit teaches US all things. He doesn't leave us hanging, he is always with us to help us and remind us of Jesus and Jesus' teaching. God in direct communication with us.

God out of the Clouds, onto our earth and into our lives. Will you have faith?
