Community for the Community

By: Admin on May 27, 2013

This Saturday morning, June 1, is Waverley church's participation in "Love Winnipeg".

Love Winnipeg was established to get churches in the city to step outside of their doors and do something to show true love. Jesus said the greatest commandments were "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’[f] 31 The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[g] There is no commandment greater than these.” Mark 12:31, 31 This was nothing new to Jesus or to his listeners at the time: Leviticus 19:18 says "love your neighbour as yourself." In fact, in Matthew 22:40, in the same conversation but from Matthew's hearing, Jesus said, "All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments."

The key is to love God. When you love God you will then truly be able to love your neighbour. So, how do you love your neighbour? It goes far, far beyond feeling and thinking nice things about them. It is DOING! Love is a verb!!

We live in Winnipeg and we say we love our community...both communities. Our first community is the one that is formed by knowing and putting our faith in Jesus Christ. That community is called, "the church". The Bible also calls it, "the Body". No matter what it is called, we are a community and God put us in it as an act of His love. Therefore, we act like community, showing each other the same love that God showed us by forgiving our sins, giving us hope, life and a community in which to grow and belong.

Next we must love our neighbour, the community in which we live and in which our own "Community of Christ" is located. We have gathered dozens of bags and boxes of clothes. We are going to give these clothes away to anyone who needs them or would like them. It is a gift, no strings attached. We'll also have a barbecue, so everyone who comes can have a hot dog while they browse our little store on the corner of Waverley and Cadboro.

The corner of our church entry way is full! This is so exciting because we have asked the Waverley community to be part of this. The sign up list is full, meaning our community is coming out to serve our community. There is still room: more clothes, more volunteers. Come out an evening or afternoon this week and sort some clothes. Come Saturday morning, June 1 at 9:00AM and be part of the big party as our community shows its love to our community.

When Jesus said, "love your neighbour as yourself," I sure think he had a clothes giveaway and bbq in southwest Winnipeg on his mind.
