Christmas Through New Eyes, the Prophets part 2 of 3

Isaiah: Saw Jesus, God with Us

There IS a purpose to all of this Christmas stuff! The idea is to take a look at what Christmas is REALLY about, more specifically, WHO Christmas is about – Jesus Christ.

If we don’t have the correct view of Jesus Christ, we will never truly catch on to or appreciate what Christmas is all about and our lives will continue in the way they have always been. How do we see Jesus Christ and Christmas?

Hundreds of years before Jesus was born there were people to whom God revealed special messages. They often weren’t sure of the outcomes of their messages, but they did know something life and world changing was coming.

Isaiah is one of the most quoted prophets in the Bible at Christmas time, between this verse and a passage in Isaiah chapter 9, we have an incredible picture of Jesus coming.

Isaiah lived and taught around 600 years before Jesus showed up on the earth. His predictions of Jesus were very accurate signs to help those who believed in God identify this special person and know why He was to come.

And here is the proof:

Isaiah 7:14: Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.

And 700 years later this message came true:

Matthew 1:22-23: All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 'The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel'--which means, 'God with us.'

God has always shown himself to His people. There have been both literal and symbolic ways, but God always was around.
With the Israelites: pillar of cloud in the day, pillar of fire in the night.
In the temple – the furniture and articles, particularly the ark of the covenant
The Prophet Isaiah even said that when God’s people were trying to discover the right thing to do, they would hear this voice that would guide them.
God spoke through his teachers and preachers, the prophets
God showed His power through many miracles.

Here is what another biographer of Jesus, John, had to say:

John 1:14, 14 The Word [Jesus] became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

God himself came to the earth and lived with us. Jesus IS GOD and He came full of grace and truth.
Grace – the underserved, generous outpouring of God’s love and forgiveness for our sins.
Truth – the clear revelation of WHO God is, Who WE are, and HOW God wants to work in and through each one of us.

God is not far from us at all. He came to us – Jesus. Jesus revealed exactly who God is. This is how we see Christmas: Jesus – God with us
